Understanding Movies (8th Edition) Details
From the Back Cover Appropriate for courses in Introduction to Film, Film and Drama, and Film and Literature, Understanding Movies is designed to help students analyze movies with precision and technical sophistication. It focuses on formalism—how the forms of the film (e.g., camera work, editing, photography, etc.) create meaning. The Eighth Edition retains the same principle of organization as its predecessors—structuring chapters around the realism-formalism dichotomy—while it updates each chapter to integrate more recent developments, films, and personalities in the field. Reviews
If you love the movies and really want to know all that is behind the magic, Giannetti is the authority. I took film courses in college in the 70s and early 80s and had the first edition of this book. Even the first edition was great in its time, and these later editions are even better. I can't believe this guy has stuck with this mission for so long. It's a life-long passion, I guess.
